Fluoride Varnish: Extra Protection for Growing Smiles

Silver Diamine Fluoride, or SDF, is a special liquid that can be brushed onto a tooth to stop small cavities from getting bigger. The treatment is quick, painless, and does not require drilling or numbing, making it an excellent option for very young children or those who may have difficulty sitting through traditional dental treatment.
SDF is often used as a temporary solution to help manage decay until a child is ready for traditional treatment, such as a filling or crown. While it can be very effective in slowing or stopping cavities, it does cause the treated area of the tooth to turn dark in color.
For kids, we sometimes explain SDF as “super tooth paint” that helps stop the cavity from spreading—though it may leave the spot looking darker.
